The Flemish Research Council (FWO) awards postdoctoral fellowships to exceptional candidates in all academic fields. Postdoctoral fellows conduct their research at a Flemish university or research institute (‘Host Institution’). The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the KU Leuven is now inviting expressions of interest from excellent candidates who intend to apply for a FWO postdoctoral fellowship during the 2024/25 academic year and would like the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the KU Leuven, Belgium, to act as their Host Institution.

About the Fellowship

The Flemish Research Council offers Junior (<3 years after PhD) and Senior (3-6 years after PhD) Postdoctoral Fellowships of up to 3 years. Fellowships are awarded for fundamental research in all areas of Theology and Religious Studies. Fellowships are awarded to candidates with excellent research backgrounds and expertise to carry out highly ambitious and original projects of potentially ground breaking nature and large scientific impact.

The application success rate is around 20%. The gross salary is circa €5398—€5845/month + annual bench fee €4000-€10,000. Residency in Belgium is required but knowledge of Dutch is not. More details about the fellowships can be found here.

About the Faculty

Successful candidates will be based at the KU Leuven’s Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, which is currently ranked 6th in the world for Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024) and is one of the oldest theological faculties in the world. The faculty has a strong international profile, with students from almost 80 different countries, and is open to all, regardless of faith or denomination. The faculty covers all the major areas of Theology and Religious Studies (e.g., biblical studies, systematic theology, religious studies, Islamic studies, church history, ethics, pastoral theology) and encourages interdisciplinary research.

Procedure

In order to apply to have the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the KU Leuven as your Host Institution please complete the application form before the 27th of October 2024. You will be notified of the result no later than the 31st of October 2024. If you are successful, you will be invited to work with a supervisor to prepare your application to the Flemish Research Council (deadline: 2ndDecember 2024).
